Sometimes replacement is clearly overdue. Sometimes it is a repair, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a system.

When to Replace
Signs It Is Time For a New System
Fifteen years or more. Most systems run fifteen to twenty years in this climate. Past that you are gambling on August rather than planning for it.
Repeat repairs. A second or third repair in one season is usually the system telling you it is done. Those costs add up to a down payment.
Bills rising for the same comfort. A compressor losing capacity works longer for less cooling. The electric bill notices before you do.
The house is cold but clammy. That is an oversizing symptom. Replacement is the chance to correct it rather than repeat it with newer equipment.
R-22 equipment. Older systems using discontinued refrigerant get expensive to service quickly. At that point repairs stop making financial sense.

How do I know what size air conditioner I need?
From the house, not from the old unit. Square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height, and the duct that has to distribute the air all factor in. Copying the previous tonnage repeats whatever mistake was made last time.
Is a bigger system better?
No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding. An oversized system cools fast, shuts off early, and never runs long enough to remove humidity. You end up with a house that is cold and clammy and equipment that wears out faster from short cycling.
How long does an AC replacement take?
A straightforward changeout is typically one day. Jobs involving duct modifications, a line set replacement, or relocating equipment can take longer, and we tell you which yours is before we start.
Should I replace the furnace at the same time?
Worth considering. The indoor coil shares a cabinet and airflow path with the furnace, so if both are a similar age, doing them together usually costs less than two separate projects. If your furnace is young, there is no reason to touch it.
What SEER rating should I get?
High enough to be efficient, not so high that the payback never arrives. In this climate the middle tiers usually make the most financial sense. We show you the price difference and the realistic running cost so you can decide.
