Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair
Blowing cold air. If the air from your vents is cool or just room temperature with the heat on, the furnace may have an ignition, burner, or control problem.
It won't turn on at all. Sometimes the culprit is as simple as a thermostat setting or a tripped breaker. When it's not, we track the failure to its source instead of guessing.
Short cycling. A furnace that starts, runs a few minutes, and shuts back off is working too hard and heating too little. Airflow restrictions and control faults are common causes.

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
The most common causes are a thermostat set to "fan on" instead of "auto," a clogged filter causing the furnace to overheat and shut down its burners, or an ignition problem. Some of these you can check yourself in a minute; others need a technician. If fresh filters and correct settings don't fix it, it's time to call.
My furnace smells like burning. Is that dangerous?
A dusty burning smell during the first startup of the season is normal and usually clears within an hour. A burning smell that persists, smells electrical, or shows up mid-season is not normal: turn the system off and have it checked. If you ever smell something like rotten eggs, leave the house and call your gas provider before anything else. Gas safety comes ahead of the furnace.
Should I repair my furnace or replace it?
It depends on the furnace's age, its condition, and what the repair is. A newer furnace with its first significant failure is usually worth repairing, while an older unit racking up repeat repairs may cost less to replace over time. How often should a furnace be serviced?
