The ones that genuinely have failed usually announce it clearly: a hum with no rotation means the motor is seized, and water dripping from the body rather than a connection means the housing has corroded through, which is not repairable. Common Symptoms
What the Noise Is Telling You
It hums but does not turn. The motor is getting power and cannot rotate. Usually a jam, sometimes a seized motor. Do not keep flipping the switch, it will burn out.
Nothing happens at all. No hum means no power reaching it. That is the reset button on the underside, the breaker, or the switch, in that order of likelihood.
Water in the cabinet below. Where it drips from matters. A connection is a repair. A drip from the body itself means the housing has rusted through and it needs replacing.
It drains slowly after grinding. The disposal is working and the line beyond it is not. That is a drain problem rather than a disposal one.
It has got noticeably louder. Worn bearings or a lost grinding element. Not urgent, but it is the unit telling you how the rest of its life is going to go.

Garbage Disposal Questions, Answered
My disposal hums but will not spin. What does that mean?
It is jammed. The motor is powered and something is blocking the plate from turning. Switch it off at the wall, and stop flipping the switch because holding a stalled motor on will burn it out. Most units have a hex socket on the underside to free the plate by hand.
My disposal is completely dead. Is it finished?
Often not. There is a small reset button on the underside of the unit that pops out when the overload trips, and a great many dead disposals come back to life the moment it is pressed. If that does nothing, check the breaker, then the switch.
What should I never put down a disposal?
Grease is the worst offender because it solidifies further down the line. Fibrous things like celery and onion skins wrap the plate, coffee grounds and eggshells settle into sludge, and starchy foods like pasta and rice swell. Cold water and small amounts is the way to run one.
Is a leaking disposal repairable?
It depends entirely on where it leaks from. A drip at the sink flange or the drain connection is a straightforward repair. Water coming from the body of the unit itself means the housing has corroded through, and that is a replacement.
How long should a garbage disposal last?
Around eight to twelve years in normal use. They are inexpensive enough that once the motor has failed, replacing usually costs less than repairing, and we will say so rather than sell you a rebuild.
Can you fit a disposal I bought myself?
Yes. We will check it suits your sink opening and dishwasher setup before starting, and fit the flange and drain assembly properly, which is where most owner-installed units end up leaking.
