Signs Your Toilet Needs Attention
It runs between flushes. A phantom refill means water is escaping the tank past a worn flapper or flush valve seal. It is a cheap part and an expensive water bill.
The flush is weak or incomplete. Often mineral build-up blocking the rim jets rather than a fault. Hard water out here does this steadily over years.
Water around the base. Usually the wax ring has failed. Left alone, water works into the subfloor and the repair stops being about the toilet.
The fixture rocks slightly. Movement breaks the seal underneath. Tightening the bolts down on a rocking toilet often cracks the base, so it needs doing properly.
A water bill that crept up. A silently running toilet is the single most common cause of an unexplained water bill in a house with no visible leak.

Why does my toilet keep running?
Almost always the flapper or the fill valve. The flapper is a rubber seal at the bottom of the tank that hardens and warps over time, letting water trickle into the bowl until the fill valve tops it back up. Both are inexpensive parts, and a running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a week.
Is a toilet leaking at the base an emergency?
Not an emergency, but do not sit on it. That water is going into the subfloor every time the fixture is used, and once the floor is damaged you are no longer paying for a plumbing repair. It is usually a failed wax ring, which is a straightforward job.
My toilet flushes weakly. Does it need replacing?
Usually not. The most common cause is mineral build-up blocking the small rim jets under the bowl edge, which our hard water produces steadily. Clearing those and checking the flush valve normally restores it. Some older low-flow models genuinely did flush badly from new, and we will tell you if yours is one.
Should I repair or replace an old toilet?
Repair, in most cases. Tank hardware is cheap and a sound porcelain fixture lasts decades. Replacement makes sense if the bowl or tank is cracked, if the flange underneath needs major work anyway, or if you want a better performing model.
Can you fix a toilet that rocks?
Yes, and it should be fixed rather than lived with. Rocking works the seal loose underneath and eventually causes a leak. The cause is usually an uneven floor or a flange sitting too low, and simply tightening the bolts down often cracks the base.
