Signs Your Water Needs Treating
Spots on glasses and fixtures. White crust on faucets and shower heads is dissolved mineral left behind. It is the clearest sign of hard water, and the same scale builds inside your water heater.
A chlorine smell or taste. Municipal supplies use chlorine or chloramine to keep water safe in the pipes. It does its job, then shows up at your tap. Carbon filtration removes it.
Grit or cloudiness. Sediment points at the supply line or, on a well, at what is coming up with the water. It wears out valves and fixtures as it passes through.
Laundry and skin feel rough. Hard water stops soap rinsing cleanly, so it stays in fabric and on skin. People often blame detergent when the water is the cause.
Appliances failing early. Scale shortens the life of water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines. Treating the water is usually cheaper than replacing them ahead of schedule.

Water Filtration Questions, Answered
Do I need a filter or a softener?
They solve different problems. A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause scale and spotting. A filter removes chlorine, sediment, and the things that affect taste and smell. North Texas water is hard enough that plenty of homes end up wanting both, but a water test tells you rather than a salesman.
Is Denton County water hard?
Yes. Most of the area runs moderately to very hard, and you see it as scale on fixtures, spots on glassware, and water heaters that wear out sooner than they should. How hard depends on your supply, which is why we test rather than assume.
We are on a well. Is that different?
Quite different. Wells can carry sediment, iron, sulphur smell, and bacteria, none of which municipal treatment has dealt with first. Well systems usually need sediment filtration ahead of anything else, and sometimes UV treatment.
Whole-home or just the kitchen sink?
If the concern is only drinking and cooking water, an under-sink reverse osmosis unit is the cheaper answer. If it is scale on fixtures, dry skin, or appliances wearing out, the treatment has to happen where the water enters the house.
How often does it need servicing?
Sediment and carbon cartridges are typically every six to twelve months depending on use. Softeners need salt topped up every month or two. Reverse osmosis membranes run a few years. We set the schedule when we install it.
Will a softener make the water feel slippery?
Some people notice it, because soap rinses properly once the minerals are gone rather than leaving a film. It is the softener working. If you dislike it, the hardness can be dialled back rather than removed completely.
