Signs Your Heat Pump Needs Repair
A winter electric bill that jumped. The classic heat pump fault. If the auxiliary strips are running when they should not be, the house stays warm and the bill goes through the roof.
It heats but not well. Lukewarm air on a mild day usually means a refrigerant or reversing valve problem rather than a system that is simply undersized.
Ice that never clears. Some frost on the outdoor coil in winter is normal, and the defrost cycle should clear it. Ice that stays means defrost is not working.
It cools but will not heat. Or the reverse. A heat pump that works in only one mode almost always points at the reversing valve or its solenoid.
Loud noise on changeover. A whoosh when the system switches modes is normal. Banging, screeching, or a persistent hum is not.

Heat Pump Questions, Answered
Why did my electric bill jump this winter?
The most likely answer is auxiliary heat. Those electric strips are backup, meant to run only when the heat pump cannot keep up. If a sensor, board, or thermostat setting is wrong they can run constantly, and the house stays warm so nothing seems broken. It is one of the first things we check.
Is ice on my outdoor unit normal?
Some frost in winter is completely normal and the defrost cycle should clear it within minutes. Ice that builds up and stays, or a unit encased in it, means defrost is not working and the system is slowly losing its ability to heat.
Why is the air from my vents cooler than a furnace?
Heat pumps deliver air at a lower temperature than gas furnaces do, often around ninety to a hundred degrees. That is below body temperature so it can feel cool at the register even while the house is heating properly. It is normal, not a fault.
My heat pump cools fine but will not heat. What is that?
Almost always the reversing valve or the solenoid that operates it. That is the component that swaps the system between heating and cooling, and when it sticks you get one mode and not the other.
Do heat pumps work in a Texas freeze?
Well down into the twenties, yes, though capacity drops as it gets colder and that is when auxiliary heat is supposed to help. What matters is that the changeover is configured properly, which is exactly what is often set up wrong.
