Finding Out Where Your Air Is Actually Going
Duct & Airflow Testing
The Problem Is Usually Not the Equipment
One room that never keeps up. An upstairs that runs five degrees warmer than downstairs. A system that was replaced two years ago and still cannot get the house comfortable. Those complaints get blamed on the equipment constantly, and the equipment is usually fine. The air is not arriving, and no thermostat setting or bigger unit will change that.
HMS Heating & Air Conditioning measures instead of guessing. Static pressure tells us how hard the system is fighting the duct, and it is the single most useful number in residential HVAC. Undersized returns, crushed flex, disconnected runs, and closed-off vents all show up in the readings. Once we know where the restriction is, the fix is usually far cheaper than the new system somebody else quoted.
Choose HMS
Built on Honesty, Since 2015
HMS Heating & Air Conditioning was founded by Gary Hays, a North Texas native who served in the Marine Corps as an aviation electrician.
He earned his HVAC license in 2015 and built the company on a simple standard: explain the problem, lay out your options with prices, and only then pick up a tool. That's how we handle every airflow diagnostic across Denton County, and it's why so many of our customers come from referrals and stay for good.
And if it turns out you don't need the expensive fix, we'll tell you that too. Honesty, integrity, and a reasonable price have been the standard here from day one.

Our Process
Diagnostics With Real Numbers
-
Map the Complaint
Which rooms, which season, and how long it has been that way. A problem that started after a remodel points somewhere different than one that has always existed.
-
Measure Static Pressure
This is the core test. It tells us how hard the blower is working against the duct system, and whether the system is choking on the return or the supply side.
-
Check Room by Room
We measure delivery at the registers so we can see which branches are starved and by how much, rather than relying on how a room feels.
-
Inspect the Duct
Crushed flex, sagging runs, disconnected boots, and leaking joints. In a Texas attic these are common and they are all fixable.
-
Find the Restriction
Usually it is the return. Undersized returns are the single most common design fault we find in North Texas houses of every age.
-
Show You the Options
You get the readings, what they mean, and what it costs to fix, ranked by what will make the biggest difference for the money.
Symptoms We Hear
Signs You Have An Airflow Problem
One room is always wrong. A single bedroom that runs hot in summer and cold in winter is almost never an equipment fault. That branch is not getting its share of the air.
Weak air at the registers. If you can barely feel air at a vent while the blower is clearly running, something between the unit and that room is restricting or leaking it.
The system short cycles. A furnace that overheats and shuts down, or an AC that freezes its coil, is often starving for return air rather than failing.
A noisy return grille. Whistling or roaring at the return is the sound of a system trying to pull more air than the opening allows. It is an audible measurement.
A new system that did not help. The most frustrating one. If replacing the equipment did not fix the comfort problem, the duct was the problem the whole time.

Common Questions
Airflow Questions, Answered
What is static pressure and why does it matter?
It is the pressure the blower has to work against to move air through your duct. Think of it as blood pressure for the system. Too high and the equipment moves less air than it should, which causes overheating in winter, frozen coils in summer, and rooms that never keep up. It takes minutes to measure and most homes have never had it checked.
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?
Heat rises, and the upstairs system in a Texas attic is fighting a much harder load. On top of that, most two story homes are built with an upstairs return that is too small. That combination is why the upstairs loses every afternoon, and it is an airflow fix rather than an equipment one.
Should I close vents in rooms I do not use?
No. It feels logical and it makes things worse. Closing vents raises static pressure across the whole system, which reduces total airflow and can push the equipment into overheating or freezing. If a room genuinely needs less air, that is a balancing job, not a closed register.
I just replaced my system and it still is not comfortable. What now?
Then the duct was the limitation, not the equipment. This is the most common reason people call us for a second opinion. Measuring static pressure will usually show it inside half an hour.
Can duct problems be fixed, or does it all have to be replaced?
Almost always fixed. Adding a return, replacing a crushed run, sealing leaking joints, and correcting a blower setting are targeted repairs. Full duct replacement is occasionally the right answer but it is rarely the first one.
Do you charge for the diagnostic?
Yes, and we quote it before we come out. It is real measurement work by a certified technician, and what it saves you against an unnecessary system replacement is usually many times the cost.
