A mini split is a small outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor heads by a refrigerant line and a small penetration through the wall. It heats and cools, it runs quietly, and it conditions only the space you are actually using rather than the whole house. HMS Heating & Air Conditioning was founded by Gary Hays, a North Texas native who served in the Marine Corps as an aviation electrician.
He earned his HVAC license in 2015 and built the company on a simple standard: explain the problem, lay out your options with prices, and only then pick up a tool. Understand the Space
How the room is used, how it is insulated, and how much sun it takes. A shop and a bedroom need very different answers.

Size It Correctly
Mini splits are easy to oversize because they come in small increments. Too much capacity short cycles and leaves the room humid.

Plan the Layout
Where the head goes, where the outdoor unit sits, and how the line set and condensate route. Planning is what makes the finished job look tidy.

Install It Properly
Mounted level, line set brazed and pressure tested, and the wall penetration sealed. Sloppy line work is what causes leaks two years later.

Vacuum and Charge
A proper vacuum before charging is the step most commonly skipped, and moisture left in a system is what kills compressors early.

Test Both Modes
Heating and cooling both get run and verified. A mini split that was only checked in one mode is half commissioned.
Good Candidates
Where a Mini Split Makes Sense
Garages and shop buildings. No duct, no problem. This is the most common mini split we install out on acreage, and it makes a metal building usable year round.
Rooms the main system cannot reach. A bonus room over the garage or a far end bedroom that has never kept up. Adding a head is often cheaper than reworking the duct.
Additions and conversions. Extending existing ductwork into an addition usually starves the rest of the house. A dedicated mini split avoids that entirely.
Spaces used part of the time. An office, a guest room, or a workshop only needs conditioning when it is occupied. A mini split lets you stop paying to cool an empty room.
Homes with no ductwork at all. Some older houses never had central air installed. A multi head system can condition the whole house without opening walls for duct.

Common Questions
Mini Split Questions, Answered
Will a mini split heat as well as it cools?
Yes. Modern units are heat pumps and they heat efficiently well below the temperatures North Texas normally sees. In a hard freeze their capacity drops, which is worth planning for if the space is the only heat source.
How many indoor heads can one outdoor unit run?
Commonly up to four or five depending on the system. That said, one outdoor unit serving several rooms means they share capacity, so it is not always the better choice over separate systems. It depends on how the rooms are used.
Are mini splits noisy?
The indoor head is quieter than a typical central system, usually a low whisper. The outdoor unit makes noise like any condenser, so where it gets mounted matters if it sits near a bedroom window.
Can you put one in a metal shop building?
Yes, and it is one of our more common requests out on acreage. Insulation matters a great deal in a metal building, and we will be honest with you if the building needs work before the equipment can keep up.
Do mini splits need maintenance?
Yes, and more owner attention than people expect. The filters in the indoor head need regular cleaning, and the blower wheel needs professional cleaning periodically or the head starts to smell and lose output.
Is a mini split cheaper than extending my ductwork?
Frequently, yes, particularly for a garage, an addition, or a room over the garage. Running new duct through finished space is invasive and it can starve the rest of the house. We will price both where both are genuinely options.
